FOB, EXW, CIF, DDP: which terms should importers choose
Incoterms define responsibility, cost and risk transfer. The cheapest quote is not always the safest option.
EXW
The buyer takes responsibility very early, often from the supplier's premises. It can look cheap but shifts export and pickup complexity to you.
FOB
A common option for sea freight: the supplier handles export and delivery to the port, while the buyer controls main freight and destination costs.
CIF
The supplier arranges freight and insurance to the destination port, but the buyer still needs to understand local charges and control document accuracy.
DDP
Convenient on paper, but risky if the provider is weak on compliance. Make sure taxes, customs and final delivery responsibility are explicit.
Summary
Choose Incoterms based on control and accountability, not only the lowest supplier quote.
